Early spring strangeness...
Feb. 25th, 2005 10:07 pmWhat a weird week this has been! My apologies to those expecting more frequent contact with me; this will be the second weekend in a row that I've spent away from "home." I've been enjoying the company of a good friend (yes, I now have a social life!). My correspondence has also suffered due to the demands of the year 9 report due date (which was yesterday). This has been on top of the usual extra training sessions and other stuff.
Have I finished my year nine reports? Nope! Fortunately, that deadline wasn't really hard; I can get my reports finished and plunked into the computer over this weekend (will be leaving to do that in the next little while). I have, however, finished the ones for the Hell 9s. That was actually quite satisfying. "What is badly holding you back from your true potential is the lack of effort you are putting into completing your class and homework. You are simply not working at the level you should be at," is 'teacher-ese' for "You are backsliding because you are a lazy little snot."
Other weirdness this week includes the introduction of light snow flurries to my experiences of British weather. Along with that has been the hassle of trying to convince my students that snowballs are NOT harmless fun (especially with how little snow is on the ground (too easy to pick up stones and the like with the snow)).
The final bit of weirdness was the return of an instructor from maternity leave, which somehow freed up enough teacher resources that I was offered the opportunity to give up my tutor group to somehow else. This will let me focus more time and energy on my English classes (yep, I'm struggling enough that they'll do that for me (sigh...)). I asked for a bit of time to make that decision, but, by lunchtime, I decided to let the form group go; however much I enjoyed the rapport I had with many of the kids in that class, it wasn't worth the hassle of dealing with the rest of them for registration and PSHE (a 'life skills' type of class).
In conversation with the year 9 team leader later on, it was playfully revealed that I was quite mad and/or ill for even hesitating to drop the form group; that opportunity is something a majority of teachers would apparently be envious of. She emphasised that I should be rejoicing (chuckle). She also informed me that I'm simply too nice to really handle the form group that I had. So I'll be paired up with another form tutor to learn how to be truly cruel and mean enough to inspire the necessary fear needed to control these kids.
And this week had not yet ended...
