Yesterday was a brilliant, sunny and, above all, warm day that prompted me to go out visiting. The weather was so nice, I wore my shorts. I had a happy visit, bought a few nice nick-knacks from Mystic Moons, enjoyed a lovely drive home, came downstairs, and stepped in water...

Yes, the basement floor was covered in an inch of water and the folks were away on vacation. I had no idea where the floor drain was, nor could I figure out why the basement was flooding. The number I was given to contact the folks was out of service range and the number I had for my uncle was non-functional. Thankfully, I remembered that my father's work phone had been loaned out to one of the guys who was helping my dad and uncle out and I called him for my uncle's contact info. Both he and uncle showed up. It was soon determined that there was no point trying to pump the water out, as the drain that was supposed to taking water away from the foundation wasn't doing it's thing and the current water table, with all the excessive melt water from that 'gloriously' warm day, was too high.

While I was busy trying to save stuff in the basement, the two set about clearing the ditch (to which the drain was supposed to lead) of snow, which they figured was contributing to all the excess. With the help of the excavator, the end of the drain was found (and broken off), revealing a two foot long plug of ice that was keeping things from draining. Once that was dealt with, the water began draining, but, with all the uneven points in the basement floor, there was a number of pools that needed to be mopped up. None of this was soon enough to save the wood flooring in my apartment, which will very likely have to be removed and replaced. *sigh*

To add injury to insult, at one point I slipped on some water at the base of the stairs and landed with my lower back against the edge of a stair. At first I was certain I did myself some real damage, but, after a few minutes, I was up and ambulatory. It seems that my torso is a lot tougher for all of the Kung Fu training and I got away with some bruising.

I was up till 4:30 in the morning mopping, setting up fans and heaters and all of that. Today, I've started into breaking down and bagging a bunch of cardboard boxes that got soaked. I'll also be packing up a lot of my stuff so it can be shuffled around during the floor replacement. There's also some triage to be done on stuff that got exposed to water. It's going to be a 'fun' day.
