Swiss Army Teacher
Jul. 13th, 2006 05:52 pmHints from a soon-to-be-leaving science teacher have proven to be well grounded. Attempts by the school to find a replacement for him have proven fruitless and today the head teacher called me in to find out what my science skills were like. Given that my science background is sufficiently strong to fudge it for a while, it is very likely that I'll be playing the role of full time science teacher for a significant portion of the next school year. My teaching portfolio is going to be so odd by the end of all this...
In other news, I've had an after-school meeting with a small number of pupils to establish a gaming club for next September where, once a week, they can gather after-school to play such games as Warhammer (a table-top strategy game), Magic (the card game) and perhaps even Dungeons and Dragons (I haven't GMed in years!). It should be a fun and stress free way to contribute to the extra-curricular activities of the school.
It's a long weekend for most of the pupils, as tomorrow we're bringing in a bunch of year 5s for a "taster day." After that, it'll be just one week to go before they're headed off for six weeks. Unfortunately for me, it has been confirmed that I'll be teaching two weeks of summer school to a bunch of year 6s who will be entering next year. I'll be teaching literacy skills and some art. The work load will be light, however, as I'll be teaching only half of each day and the lessons shall be of a relatively light nature.
It may prove interesting to see what tomorrow brings (and how much of a role I'll have in it). On the other hand, I might wind up spending the entire day just wandering the corridors looking for trouble. This is, of course, only if I don't keel over from this nasty chest cough that flared up last night. I almost decided against coming in today (though it wound up being pretty light (I was an art teacher all day)).
Tomorrow I'm headed off to
imapunkin's place for the weekend. I've been missing her as she's been ill all week and not up to taking visitors. I'm also looking forward to finally getting to play with my new Canon Powershot A700 which arrived at her house on Monday. (In case you're wondering, I usually have parcels sent to her place as parcel pick up is a bitch for me to deal with at mine.)
On the fitness front, exercise has been halted on account of sore back. Methinks this is courtesy of attempts at yard work last weekend, specifically, trying to start the replacement petrol strimmer. Again, I encountered many of the same problems as the first one and, this time, the engine seized. When this one was brought back, we discovered that all the models of this brand had been recalled due to an engine fault in manufacturing. This time, the strimmer was replaced by a set of long handled clippers (would've bought an old fashioned scythe if one had been available) that seemed to do the job more efficiently than the strimmers did (mostly as I wasn't wasting so much time trying to start them).
The back has pretty much healed, but I'm still on a break from exercise until the chest cold clears up. However, I have been using a bit of the time to find other martial art and fitness clubs in the area, as the prices for the club I went to the Monday of last week were just too high to justify with my current budget. Next week I'll be checking out an Aikido club and returning to a schedule of power walking (as my knees refuse to bear the jogging any further). I might try some form of cardio-kick program, if I can find one for cheap.
That's pretty much all for now...
(Wow! This entry wound up longer than anticipated!)

Date: 2006-07-23 09:30 am (UTC)One day I am going to get one! lol.
K. and I bought bikes. Peddle bikes. We love them. I haven't had a bike since I was 12. At first I was terrified to even go around a corners and it was impossible to get on the bike without nearly falling off. But I am doing much better. Maybe you should get bike!
