In the interest of building relationships with my new spiritual community, I held a didgeridoo workshop on Tuesday last night. I gave instructions how to create a drone, how to practice circular breathing for non-stop didge playing, how to create various sound effects, and various cultural aspects and history of the instrument. Attendance wasn't quite what I was hoping for, but those who showed up seemed to have had a great time and got a lot of out of it. So, in all, for my first workshop outside of a school environment, I'll call it a success.

In other news, I seem to be getting my sorry butt back into shape. I've done two weapons workouts and a three mile run this week, so it seems like I'm getting back on track. I desperately need to be, too, as I've been getting a little rounder than I'm comfortable with, as of late. *sheepish grin*

Finally, I managed to get in to a tax kiosk to get my return done, pretty much on the last day I could have. *chuckle* I expect to get a pretty hefty return of over $2000. Yay me!

Well, I've resumed running and sword training this week, though my muscles seem to be unhappy about all that. Methinks I may not be getting enough calcium, as my legs, calves in particular, have been crampy since Wednesday (Haidong Gumdo class). I picked some calcium supplements, as well as a glucosamine sulphate cocktail to help my joints hold up under the abuse, so I'll see how that goes.

Meanwhile, I'm getting odds and sods done around the flat, including picking up a pine board shelving kit from which I created a small table for my lap top and my new altar (finally!). I'm not so happy with the furniture additions, as the pine turned out to be really crappy wood that I paid far too much for, but one makes do with one has. I can always replace 'em later when the opportunity presents itself.

I've also replanted the tomato plant that my mother gave me. It sits in the window sill in a planter designed to fit nicely into a corner. Between that and the two plants I'm looking after for my mother (a small aloe vera plant and the tall whatever-the-heck-it-is that
[personal profile] 1grl_revolution gave her), my flat is actually looking rather green.

I've also begun rearranging my meager bits of furniture so now my flat looks a bit less 'bachelor'. *grin*

Saturday was fairly productive in that I managed to get up early enough to go to the market, chat with a new friend, pick up a substantial amount of cider (some of which, if it was just a bit more sparkly, would be a damn good match for my beloved Scrumpy Jack), did another Haidong Gumdo lesson, and then went off to work.

Finally, this week I've also repaired my didgebox, after it got a hole knocked into it during the move. I'm actually considering hosting an introductory didjeridoo workshop for the group of pagan contacts I've recently made, though, if it happens, it'll be a little later in the future. I'd have to acquire some decent bits of pvc from which to contstruct some cheap didges from. It would certainly be a fun excuse for a party! *grin*

My current conundrum involves the upcoming shift bid, where I'm thinking of trying for some regular day-like hours. It would be nice to actually have my evenings free to pursue my budding social life, as well as get in more martial arts, but that would also knock off about $160 per month that I normally earn in shift premiums for working late nights. Yep, it again comes down to money versus quality of life. 'Course, recent experience suggests that going with QoL may be a good idea.

And my shift has just ended! Later, gators!

Yep, now that we have good weather again, I'm back to watching Blue and Red haul off loads of dirt. Oh yay. As the excavator is carefully digging the ditches, it's taking them a long time to load the trucks. This is the second day of it. I'm so really, really glad I have access to a computer during all this.

Granted, being forced to stay in one place has given me LOTS of time to do sit down things. With it, I have:

  • Done a lot of work transferring my favourite journals from PDC to here
  • Tagged a number of postings from my memories
  • Tweaked my resumes some more
  • Applied to a few more jobs online
  • Started getting involved in an e-mail RPG
  • Gotten more deeply involved in Scarybirds - a dark fantasy fiction collaboration site
  • Started a short story at said site
  • Engaged in a lot of correspondence
  • Finished off Knife of Dreams, by Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time series rocks!)
  • Played far too much Zuma for my own good
  • Recorded a little work on my didge and a try out for a bit of voice acting

Yep, lots done! (Oh, there goes Blue.)

Okay. It is done. The stuff I'm shipping to Canada is pretty much ready to go. I've already contacted the shipping company and forked out the *glurch!* £230 needed to get 'em home. I've also contacted the airline and found out, much to my relief, that, yes, I can simply bring the didges with me and check them in. If they go over my weight limit, oh well. For their weight, they'll actually cost, at most, half to bring along than it would be to ship 'em. I'll also bring the damn printer along with me as well. Again, I'm not too concerned about the excess baggage charge for that.

And, yes, I'm pretty close to ready to go for my trip to Germany tomorrow, even though I've run a wee late in doing so. Oh well. So I'll be shy a little sleep tomorrow. That shouldn't prove much of a problem.

I'll set two alarms tomorrow morning, though, just in case. Actually, mostly in case we have a repeat of what happened this afternoon when a lightning strike knocked out power in several neighourhoods for a couple of hours... just as I was stepping into the shower. That shower, given the water heater requires electricity to run, was both quick and chilly. *chuckle*

Well, I'm off to bed and tomorrow, to GERMANY!

Auf Wiedersehen!!!

ARGH!!!

The day went by smoothly. I had even spent a lovely few hours touring Rochester whilst obtaining the needed tubes for the didge. The packing of the didges went smoothly and I discovered there may be a possibility of bringing them with me on the plane as excess luggage, costing quite a bit less.

I spent much of the evening filling out the second box, carefully sorting fiddly bits into smaller boxes to put into it. I got everything to fit nicely and I was seeing an end to the packing for the shipping.

Then I weighed the damn thing.

11 FCUKING KILOS OVER!!!

*sigh* It's a quarter past two in the morning and I now have to see how much of the Gods cursed extra weight I can stash into the large suitcase. And it looks like the biggest piece of extra weight, my printer/scanner, may have to be shipped seperately after all.

Dammit.

Needless to say, the trip into London tomorrow is off. I should be able to squeeze it in when I get back from Germany, hopefully.

This holiday is causing me way too much stress!

I desperately need a Life-on-Hold Button. Yes, there are far fewer fiddly bits to hassle with, but I'm running out of time if I'm to have all my boxes packed and ready for pickup on Friday. That is, I'm running out if I still want to cram in a trip to Rochester AND to London, and then pack for my trip to Germany. (Okay, that last won't take long, but still.)

As for the quest for shipping tubes for my didges, I've had some ups and downs. I wasted a hell of a lot of time trying to find postal tubes wide enough for my largest didge, only to have no joy until I stepped into a carpet shop and salvaged a section of carpet roll tube. I repaired that only to discover that the small didge actually DOESN'T fit inside the larger one as it looked so clearly like it would. ARGH!!!

Fortunately, getting tubes for that one will be MUCH easier and, after consulting with the shipping company, I know I can tape both tubes together and count it as one 'box'. What a lot of hassle! Worse still is how much it's going to cost me to ship them to Canada. However, shipping the two will cost about as much as buying ONE in Canada (okay, actually the States and having it shipped to Canada) and that's without having any idea what it would sound like. Feh! At least I now have the added excuse of fetching some postal tubes to go to Rochester.

I'm looking forward to that; there's both a large Norman castle and a cathedral to check out, as well as some funky shops. And it's all conveniently located to make for a quick phototour, so I can come home in plenty of time to, you guessed, pack some more.

And if I should finish packing early enough? Well there's all the coursework that still has to be marked. Blech! Fortunately, the year 11 class I have are not the strongest of writers and, hence, not the most prolific, either, though they seemed to have tried a lot harder this year than I've seen them do last year, bless.

Yep, tomorrow Rochester, Friday London, Saturday Germany. That's just getting a wee bit action packed! And, yes, I know I get back Wednesday, but THEN I need to make a weekend visit to Aylesbury to see some dear friends of mine up there.

And let's not forget the coursework marking...

GLAH!

Yep, I haven't posted in a while.

A couple of weekends ago, I went to the Star Wars Celebration Europe convention in London with a friend. 'Twas my first sci fi convention of any kind and it was, ummm..., interesting... Clearly, it was an event for collectors, though the die hard fans dressing up costume made the thing quite entertaining. The Force was strong amongst them (as well as the Farce).  ;) Clearly though, if you had any form of Star Wars (or any other sci fi) merchandise to sell, this was the place to sell it. Amongst interesting things seen were: a venue selling a host of original props from a variety of films (I saw one of G'Kar's face prosthetics!), storm troopers of all shapes and sizes, the actors for both Hollys from Red Dwarf, and a fun costume competition hosted by Warwick Davis (Wicket the Ewok). The day was topped off by dinner at Chillie's with my friend. 'Twas a good day!

As for the nerfs I am herding, they're still pretty wretched. Two of my classes are shaping up a bit, but the other two are proving quite problematic. One class is filled with kids who seem wholly immature both mentally and emotionally. There is something seriously wrong when about a third of the class demands C-V-C (consonant-vowel-consonant words like cat, dog, etc.) spelling sheets because anything else is too difficult. And two of them even struggle badly with those! As for their behaviour towards one another, let's just say that the first few weeks of the next term will be spent purely on conflict resolution and anger management.

I'm not trained as a primary teacher!

It hasn't been all bad. As I discover what does and doesn't work with my classes, I've had some better lessons with them. And yesterday proved to be an entertaining distraction. Courtesy of some additional funding made available to the school for the purpose, we celebrated cultural diversity. We had workshops on steel pan playing, Indian dance, music, French bowling games, batik and even an introduction to didgeridoo playing (led by yours truly!), amidst other events. 'Twas good fun!

The remaining two and a half days of next week will likely be taken up by worksearches and other light stuff. I'm certainly not going to fight to get really productive lessons out of this lot! *chuckle*

There will be some improvements next term: I will no longer be in a crappy room with crappy furniture as the crew is just about finished knocking two small rooms in the English department to make a large one, I will regain use of a projector and white board setup, support will be more consistent, and I've been told that the new year 7s I'll be receiving, whilst still being pretty damn weak ability wise, are much better behaved than the lot of year 8s I now have.

Still, we're running low on TAs (they're not being as readily replaced when they leave or retire) and we're losing a vital member of the staff, our current deputy head, who is retiring this year. THAT is going to be a blow that may send the school spiraling downwards. There isn't a lot of confidence in our new head teacher. A lot of teachers are saying that they'll see how things go this term/year and, if it gets really rough, they'll be leaving. I'm currently of the same inclination. My plan will be, during the next term, to save up a ticket to anywhere and, if this ship starts sinking too fast, jump. I've already done three tours of duty in this country and I don't need to prove anything to myself; if my job gets too crappy, I'm gone.

In other news, this weekend will be spent doing a lot of cleaning, laundry and such, in preparation for my departure to Canada (east coast, not west - sorry!) near the end of next week. Yep, I'm headed back to spend time with immediate family and my grandfolks. I imagine that revisiting many of my childhood haunts will likely prove to be quite restorative to my spirit. I'm certainly going to enjoy spending some lazy days camping on the beach!

I happened to be looking in the dressing mirror after my run today (yes, the fifth this week) and I noticed that I had a vein popping out on my shin. Yes, my shin. Now I know that my legs have been changing quite dramatically (with thigh muscles starting to look hardcore), but I never expected to seen a vein on my shin; it's not one of those places that I figured would need a lot of blood flow, unlike, say calves or feet.

In other bits of news, I'm still at home, as opposed to spending the weekend with [livejournal.com profile] imapunkin. Scheduled maintenance has shut down rail service to her place for the entire weekend, replacement bus service is arduous and her car is out of commission. (sigh...) Ah well, I got a start on tidying my room (it's been needing it for a while), got lots of practice on my didge (I'm thinking I may have to get a better one if I'm to progress much further), and did a lot of puttering around on the internet (I even installed the Jabber program to chat real time with the lot of you!). I even had a really nice lay in this morning (till 10!).

I've still a fair bit to do, such as finishing my room, preparing the new timetables for my pupils (as our schedules will be changing as of next week), ironing my clothes, and watching Underworld: Evolution.

I getting very close to being able to perform circular breathing whilst playing the didge. I can actually sustain noise whilst breathing in; I just have to work on being able to do it consistently. Just need more practise...
the_vulture: (Man/Vulture)
I picked up a new instrument a couple of weeks ago. I'm now the proud owner of a new didgerdoo (cheap Indonesian bamboo variety). I can make funky sounds with it, but I'm still trying to learn the circular breathing technique that will allow me to play continuously. I'm having much fun trying, though, and I think I may be getting close.
