I must make a better effort to keep up with my blog. It gets to be a bit difficult, though, as my leisure time is somewhat limited and often taken up by other pursuits. Alas...

On my way at about 2 in the morning last Tuesday, I had a bit of a disturbing encounter with some of the local thuggery. As I was walking along the street nearing home, a jeep full of young men turned around the corner from the opposite side of the sheet. They swiftly pulled to a stop just ahead of me, after having accelerated through the turn. I continued walking along, though I strongly suspected I was the object of their attention, for a number of reasons; first, they have simply wanted some information, like directions. Second, if their intentions were not so benign, showing fear by stopping or altering travel is a mistake. Third, if it was to come to a physical confrontation, the jeep would have served as a good tactical obstruction by which to limit how many of the little boogers could come at me at once. (Crikey! With that level of paranoia and continuous risk evaluation, you'd think I'd grown up in some crime ridden ghetto.)

There were five young men in the jeep, maybe in their late teens or early twenties. Fortunately, all of them looked like I could drop them in one solid hit. And perhaps that's why, when I finally got fairly close to the vehicle, they peeled away, with but a singular, violent throwing motion (hardly threatening as the passenger window was rolled up) and a menacing sneer from the driver. 'Course, slightly annoyed look I was probably sporting at the time might also have had something to do with it. As mentioned earlier, thugs of this nature prefer a fearful nature and it was actually kinda hard to be fearful of this lot, even if there was five of them.

Still, when I got home, I phoned the event in to the local police. These little hoodlums may have had second thoughts about picking a fight with me, but I have smaller and female colleagues at work, some of whom I knew would be walking these streets mere hours from the point this occurance. That's aside from any other unfortunate member of the public who might've ran afoul of them. In most cases, I'd be skeptical if the cops would do anything about it, but these local ones actually seem to maintain a pretty active presence, as demonstrated on Saturday, so perhaps something good came of that call.

In other news, I've racked up a bit of a bonus by working a day of overtime yesterday. Yeah, I'll be working a six day week, but, honestly?, that's not at all that taxing. The only issue is squeezing in time to get other stuff sorted in my off hours. Today, for example, I took a bike ride out to a local charity used goods warehouse to check into possible furniture for my flat. Sadly, that seemed to be nigh a wasted effort as they were charging quite a bit for what was quite slim pickings. I'm better off shopping for stuff at Walmart and Zellers. This was especially disappointing because I really wanted to pick up something I could use as an altar (I've been feeling somewhat spiritually amiss) and it was over an hour's worth of time I could have devoted to other things. I at least, however, came home with a rice cooker/veggie steamer in reasonable condition for a mere four dollars.

I also got a bit of exercise on the bike, which helped clear out the lactic acid burn from yesterday's run. It was a pleasant enough run that took me through a lovely marsh and allowed me to soak up a luxurious amount of sunshine. Sadly, though, my nipples got chafed (owie!) and, alas, there was no one about to kiss them better for me. *melodramatic sigh*

Coffee....

Usually, I have a tendency to go to bed just a bit too late for my own good. Ironically, it's 8:46 PM and I'm now drinking coffee to stay awake until the wee hours of the morning. I was doing fine the last few evenings, but now, on the eve of the start of my job, I'm beginning to nod off earlier than normal. *shakes head*

It might have something to do with the extended bike trip I took today. I probably drove a lot farther than I should've, considering I'll be riding the next five days straight, but I just wanted to do a bit of exploring. The weather was a bit miserable for a bike trip, but that's something I'm going to have to adapt to. During the summer months, it may do to have a spare shirt in the backpack, but I should invest in some serious lightweight rain gear soon. I also took a closer look at potential routes home. My choices were going along the roadways, or going on the park trail along the marsh.

The former is kind of edgy as I'd be riding back home at one in the morning, when many drivers might not be attentive enough to notice a bicyclist along the roadway. Friday nights would be even more perilous, given the possiblity of drunken idiots behind wheels. Still, at least the road ways are lit and in public view, unlike the park path, which, although safe from motor vehicles, could easily harbor any number of bored assholes hanging out in groups with nothing better to do (let alone possible muggers and the like).

Fortunately, it appears I can cut down on much of the hazards on both paths by sticking to the more open areas of the park path for the first part of my trip and then cutting to the roadways when they enter the residential section where there is slower traffic, higher visibilty, and even a bike path along side much of it. That will conveniently cut out much of the thickly wooded sections of the park path where I would less likely be able to spot trouble before I rode over it.

Is it ideal? No. But I've at least minimized my risks for the short period of time that I'll actually be driving that route (two months at most) before I either move or get a car.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to stay awake...

The other night, as I lay me down to sleep, I was looking at the rather large picture window that takes up most of my outside wall and realized that, in the event of a zombie holocaust, I'd be zombie bait. (Don't ask me why I think about such things; maybe it's just the gamer in me trying to find a way to express itself now that I'm no longer playing D&D.)

Essentially, not only is my room fairly indefensible against zombies (or anyone armed with a brick, for that matter), the entire house, as beautiful as it is, would have as much resistance to invasion as a greenhouse in a field of rocks. My former single room flat has more defensibility.

Granted, the property has one thing that my flat does not - the garage. Now much of the garage, too, has far too many windows to even keep a rabid gang of hoodies at bay for long, but the middle bay can actually be closed off from the front and provides far more defensive value. Furthermore, it's got a few things I wouldn't have access to in my former flat, like the spade, the machete, the chainsaw, the gas powered scythe, the axes, the pitchfork, the TRACTOR (with enclosed cabin), the other chainsaw, the pick axe, and other goodies (did I mention the machete?). Yep, a veritable arsenal of zombie destruction... if I could make it to it after the house got overrun. *chuckle*

In other news, I completed another 3.5 mile run. The thighs were a bit unhappy about that to begin with, but shut up soon after the run began. The nipples, sadly, took up the cry of complaint as they got chaffed. Yerg! Add in a bit of surveying that involved climbing over windfalls and you've got a fairly physically active day.

Final musing: camouflage is not always such a good thing. After spending an hour or so riding around on the lawnmower, I commenced with trimming the odd bits of uncut lawn with the battery powered strimmer (also from the arsen... err... garage). At one point I looked down as I saw what I initially believed to be water running along a bit of concrete. A second glance revealed the movement to actually be a baby garter snake that just narrowly avoided getting snicker sneed by the weed wacker. The wee thing made good its narrow escape and fled into what remained of the grass, disappearing from view within moments.

Yep, that's the salient bits that have run through my mind today, only to continue without stopping...

Well, I've decided I'm going to go Friends Only on this blog. I haven't been using it all that much and it has become rather secondary to my other blog, which I will be copying and pasting from. However, since photolinks lead back to the other site, methinks I'd like to keep future posts out of the hands of the general public.

EDIT: June 26, 2008: The photolink issue has become a lot less relevant, so I'll be switching back to (mostly) full public viewing.
