Yesterday, I did another run, which is good. It's been a while since I've been running. I had to push to finish a half hour run, though; I've gotten soft. I also discovered that I need ice cleats. I took a fall, but landed with a damn near textbook breakfall. I was actually surprised by how pain and injury free that fall was, despite landing on ice and pave. Seriously! I've taken harder falls on rubber training mats. I simply just got up and kept on running. I might not be so luck next time, though, so I'd better invest in some traction.

In other news, my holidays finally got sorted out. I'll actually have 9 days off, allowing me to spend Christmas with my relatives. This is a good thing for me. :) My only stress now is waiting for my next paycheque so I can afford to mail stuff overseas. I've got most of my shopping done, but sending it off is a wee problematic at the mo'. *sheepish grin*

Other'n that, nothing really new or exciting going on.

It took while to actually get to reinstalling Windows yet. On a suggestion from my friendly ISP, whilst getting needed info for my internet service, I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware. As AVG did it, it came up with a system clear. AVG, however, as Malwarebytes was sniffing through the system restore files for my external hard-drive, picked up a trojan that Malware flushed out of inactivity, but did not see itself. This trojan may very well be why I haven't been able to do any system restores, which was the first thing on the list when I tried fixing a number of my system issues. I'll be going ahead with the reinstall, though, when I get home from work.

Today after work, I finally got to business. After a little bit of fiddling with partitions, I've finally got XP up and running on the lappy, as well as AVG installed. I still have a whole host of drivers and such to install, but I at least have a working internet connection. Yay me!

In other news, I got about 90 minutes off for a paid lunch today, as I was part of the winning team for a competion at work. Had me a damn fine Angus burger and plenty o' laughs. Meanwhile, the rest of the department was dealing with the queue that arose when our team left the floor. *evil chuckle*

Whilst getting the 'puter sorted out, I watched a moderately spooky film, "The Unborn," and lots and lots of the first season of the cartoon series "Shaolin Showdown." (Yes, I'm a big kid at heart. *chuckle*) All in all, a good day.   : )

PAIN!

Lots and lots of PAIN!

Last week was spent with a spiteful back. The week before, I was feeling perky, and even got a couple of runs in. The ache started with the first run, but was okay enough that I got in a run on Saturday (go ME!). Then on Sunday, I got a nasty twinge whilst moving some firewood and another the day after when I slipped a bit on some ice. It was bad enough that I called in sick at work on Tuesday (okay, okay, the fact that D. and daughter were over as well (stranded by ice pellet storm) also provided some incentive...). Thankfully, the ache has diminished substantially and I wager I should be okay by the end of the weekend.

Meanwhile, aside from my dorsal dilemma, life has been good. The beginning of the week was spent in happy company and the rest is going by fast. I am, however, starting to lose faith in humanity. There are just too many stupid people buying Blackberries when they really, really shouldn't.

So, not only have I actually started filling out the actual substitute teaching application (I've had plenty o' time to work on it on the job, with the average of about TWO calls per evening between the hours of 12 and 2 AM!), I've also started back into the swordwork with a twenty minute workout yesterday. Tomorrow, D. and I will be off to check out some Tai Ch'i at the Y. No, it's probably not going to be Chen style, but any Tai Ch'i is better than no Tai Ch'i, so off we go.  :)

So, yeah, I should be either studying for the closed book portion of the final test for the Blackberry course, or at least working on the take home portion.

And, yet, here I am...  *rolls eyes at self*  :-)

It involves hopping on one leg and punching the air at waist level with both arms enthusiastically! *very silly grin*

Recently, I had learned that I had been passed over for the position of acting trainer. That was disappointing, but predicted. Still, it had me feeling a little under appreciated and questioning where I was going to go in this organization, especially given that the overtime opportunities I had been counting on to make some extra cash seem to have dried up recently.

About ten minutes ago, I just got a call from my team manager. As I was, according to him, among the most technically minded of his team, he just offered me a position to go into Blackberry technical support! It'll mean an immediate wage increase of 50 cents/hour, far more human hours than I'm working now, a chance to learn some really wild technical stuff and, oh yeah, the use of a BLACKBERRY!!!

SWWEEEETT!!!!

I start training on the 24th!!!

PS: I feel a bit more appreciated by my company, now.  :)

So, between calls, I'm going to be attempting to roll out some sort of simple set of role playing rules to be used in a play-by-email RPG, as I've been really inspired by [info]rowyn's efforts with the game she's running and I'm thinking of starting one of my own some time in the not-so-distant future.

So far, I've decided on having 3 primary stats: Mightyness, Moxie, and Mojo. Mightyness would be cover all the physical end of things, like strength, agility, etc. You would use this score to determine: how readily one can strike a foe, amount of damage, dodging falling buildings, avoiding stepping in dog poop, etc. Moxie deals with all things mental, including hotwiring a car, researching paranormal phenomena, doing your taxes, etc. Mojo is the magic/spiritual stat and would include feats of willpower, psychic prediction, and skewing your odds of winning the lottery.

The three secondary stats would be derivatives of the primary (just like a colour wheel!). They would include Meat, an average of Mightiness and Mojo that would represent your general ability to resist and mitigate physical damage and how long you can run to avoid taking damage in the first place. Mana, an average of Moxie and Mojo, would, for most characters, work something akin to Force points in WEG Star Wars, representing Fortune smiling upon the character and allowing him or her to do something extraordinary. For those characters capable of casting magic, it will also dictate how much magical might a character can toss around in a given period of time. Finally, there is Monay, an average of Mightiness and Moxie, which represents the character's wealth and influence. It would be used for things like bribing security guards, flirting with the sexy member of the opposite sex, and ensuring you have change for the parking meter.

I'm thinking of having stats scores ranged on a scale of 1 to 9, with 4 being average untrained human. Die rolls would be resolved by players stating a number from 0 to 3, which would be multiplied by a randomly determined 1 or -1 and then added to the applicable stat. The result would be compared to a target number or an opposing roll.

Character generation would include a few Merits and Minuses, wherewith unusual abilities and disabilities could be purchased.

That's the system thus far. I welcome any suggestions as to how they could be tweaked or expanded.

As for campaign ideas, I've got the following rolling around in my head:

1) A modern martial arts comedy fantasy based at least somewhat on the film 'Big Trouble in Little China', where bonus Mana can be earned by the entertainment value of various postings.

2) A gritty urban fantasy based on the arrival of magic into the world, in a style similar to Shadowrun, only more contemporary.

3) Something nice and postapocalyptic! This could involve a rural or urban setting (compare Mad Max to The Warriors) and may or may not involve mutation (ranging from normal humans to mutant anthropomorphic animals, a la Roadhogs).

4) Any other idea that might just catch my fancy between now and then (whizz one by me, if you're interested).

So, any of that sound interesting?

I must make a better effort to keep up with my blog. It gets to be a bit difficult, though, as my leisure time is somewhat limited and often taken up by other pursuits. Alas...

On my way at about 2 in the morning last Tuesday, I had a bit of a disturbing encounter with some of the local thuggery. As I was walking along the street nearing home, a jeep full of young men turned around the corner from the opposite side of the sheet. They swiftly pulled to a stop just ahead of me, after having accelerated through the turn. I continued walking along, though I strongly suspected I was the object of their attention, for a number of reasons; first, they have simply wanted some information, like directions. Second, if their intentions were not so benign, showing fear by stopping or altering travel is a mistake. Third, if it was to come to a physical confrontation, the jeep would have served as a good tactical obstruction by which to limit how many of the little boogers could come at me at once. (Crikey! With that level of paranoia and continuous risk evaluation, you'd think I'd grown up in some crime ridden ghetto.)

There were five young men in the jeep, maybe in their late teens or early twenties. Fortunately, all of them looked like I could drop them in one solid hit. And perhaps that's why, when I finally got fairly close to the vehicle, they peeled away, with but a singular, violent throwing motion (hardly threatening as the passenger window was rolled up) and a menacing sneer from the driver. 'Course, slightly annoyed look I was probably sporting at the time might also have had something to do with it. As mentioned earlier, thugs of this nature prefer a fearful nature and it was actually kinda hard to be fearful of this lot, even if there was five of them.

Still, when I got home, I phoned the event in to the local police. These little hoodlums may have had second thoughts about picking a fight with me, but I have smaller and female colleagues at work, some of whom I knew would be walking these streets mere hours from the point this occurance. That's aside from any other unfortunate member of the public who might've ran afoul of them. In most cases, I'd be skeptical if the cops would do anything about it, but these local ones actually seem to maintain a pretty active presence, as demonstrated on Saturday, so perhaps something good came of that call.

In other news, I've racked up a bit of a bonus by working a day of overtime yesterday. Yeah, I'll be working a six day week, but, honestly?, that's not at all that taxing. The only issue is squeezing in time to get other stuff sorted in my off hours. Today, for example, I took a bike ride out to a local charity used goods warehouse to check into possible furniture for my flat. Sadly, that seemed to be nigh a wasted effort as they were charging quite a bit for what was quite slim pickings. I'm better off shopping for stuff at Walmart and Zellers. This was especially disappointing because I really wanted to pick up something I could use as an altar (I've been feeling somewhat spiritually amiss) and it was over an hour's worth of time I could have devoted to other things. I at least, however, came home with a rice cooker/veggie steamer in reasonable condition for a mere four dollars.

I also got a bit of exercise on the bike, which helped clear out the lactic acid burn from yesterday's run. It was a pleasant enough run that took me through a lovely marsh and allowed me to soak up a luxurious amount of sunshine. Sadly, though, my nipples got chafed (owie!) and, alas, there was no one about to kiss them better for me. *melodramatic sigh*

It's Wednesday and I is tired. Not so much in the spiritual, emotional, or mental sense, but pretty much in the physical. And that, even seems to be focussed primarily in my legs. Yep, instead of getting easier after a two day break, it seems that biking to and from work is getting harder. That's a bit troubling as I figure I won't be moving out till the end of August, leaving well over two weeks of biking left to suffer through (*whimper*). Over the last two evenings, I've actually had to walk my bike over hills that I used to be able to ride. And not only are my legs wearing down, all this riding is taking its toll on the bike, which is in dire need of some maintenance (including adjusting the chain tension, readjusting the derailers, readjusting the seat height, reseating the front tire bead, and replacing the rear brake pads, as well as a good lube job). The new apartment cannot come soon enough!

Sadly, though, finding a new roost is proving a lot more involved than first anticipated. That mostly has to do with me being picky. With an 'okay' from the Universe (provided by [info]haikujaguar in her latest One Card Draw found here: http://haikujaguar.livejournal.com/548295.html?thread=8846023#t8846023 ), I've decided that I'm going to be a bit less miserly about how much I'm going to be spending on my apartment this time 'round. I want a living space, not just a space to live in. That means something larger than my last flat, and definately not a shared accomodation. Still, I figure I should be able to get something decent for only $650 a month. What's an extra $100 for a bit of luxury?

Finding the dream home may prove a challenge, if my first attempts at viewing are to be any indication. The first place I went to see was in a small, four apartment block building. The interior was rather nice and had ample space. It even had features such as built in humidity control and in-wall heating. The outside was, well, unfinished. That, in itself was not such a bad thing, as the building had just been recently erected. However, I couldn't help but frown on the support posts for the external stairway and balcony resting half-way off their concrete feet. Even more alarming was noticing that the floor on the inside of the apartment was already sagging over a beam (the place had been finished just last November!). Add in that the neighbourhood looked kinda skeezy and that makes it an 'uh unh' from me.

I was supposed to attend a viewing at another place today. Yesterday, however, I decided to scout out the neighbourhood for the place, as I had a bit of extra time and the apartment was very close to work. Sadly, the apartment, a basement suite, was also very close to a number of downtown's nightspots, conjuring the uncomfortable image of my living room window being peed on by some drunken reveler at three in the morning. If THAT wasn't deterrent enough, as I was looking around, I was startled by the thunderously loud 'BING BING BING' of a railway crossing signal. Yes, the apartment was right next to the only rail line running through town, a rail line, I might add, which is exceedingly active.

Can you say "cancel the viewing"?  I knew you could!

I think I may actually look into one of the professionally managed apartment complexes. They're pricier, but may prove much more worth the expense. And, hey, my job will be paying me enough to afford a slightly more affluent lifestyle any how.

Speaking of the job, the training is going well. I've had a second test in which I've scored very high. And the crew I'm with continuous to be a fun lot to be around. This is aside from all the nifty stuff I'm learning about cellular communications, like how wireless telephone networks work and how to send an e-mail using the text feature of my phone (didja know you could do that?). I think I may come to really enjoy my employment with this company.

the_vulture: (Default)

I'm two days into training as a wireless technical support guru. Despite the late hours (and maybe even because of 'em), I've actually been having a good time. The crew I'm with is relaxed and fun. The material I'm learning is both interesting and challenging, though not overwhelming. My only real problem, aside from the increasingly sore legs from riding to and from, is trying to cram all the acronyms (most of the three letter variety) into my brain. Wireless network diagrams involve a LOT of acronyms!

As for the riding, I've discovered that, for all the perceived risk, the night time rides back are very quite and actually kinda pleasant. At least they're more pleasant than my afternoon ride to work, which, despite being mostly downhill, actually seems to hurt more. The nearest guess as to how that's supposed to work is that I spend more time awake between the afternoon and evening ride, rather than vice versa, thus giving my legs a longer period of increased circulation in which to clear out the lactic acid in the muscles. (Any of you got a better theory?)

Other'n that, life is life.  :-)
